ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The 15th-ranked Navy gymnastics team will host No. 12 William & Mary on Sunday at Macdonough Hall in Annapolis 3 p.m. Sunday's dual will be the first of three between the programs this season.
Both the Midshipmen and Tribe began their seasons last weekend with the Navy Open. The Mids' took fourth with a score of 398.8, while the Tribe took second with a 409.4.
With 12 freshmen and seven sophomores, the Midshipmen have more underclassmen on their roster than any other NCAA team and 10 of those newcomers saw action last weekend. Mitchell Larios and Josh Gong posted the best individual finishes of any of the Mids' freshmen as Larios placed eighth in the parallel bars (13.6) while Gong was 10th on the rings (13.75).
Chris Junghans, one of three Mids to compete in the all-around last weekend, placed third overall with a score of 81.7. The 81.7 tied for the second-highest score of his career. Thomas Goodell registered a 78.75 and Eric Viscardi a 77.55 as the sophomores competed in the all-around for the first time in their respective careers.
William & Mary is led by junior Landon Funiciello who won the rings competition (15.35) and placed fourth on both the floor (14.4) and parallel bars (14.5) at the Navy Open last weekend.
Navy and William & Mary will also meet March 9 in Annapolis and March 16 in Williamsburg, Va. The two schools split a pair of dual meets last season with each team winning in their own gym.
