McVay Named ECAC Rookie of the Week
DANBURY, Conn. – Freshman Ryan McVay (Roseville, Calif.) earned his second straight ECAC Rookie of the Week honor on Tuesday as the conference recognized the first-year gymnast’s success from this past Saturday against Army in the 2018 Star Meet. McVay competed in the all-around and helped the Mids to a dominant 402.9-391.7 victory over the Black Knights.
A winner of this award for the second consecutive week, McVay recorded a score of 78.3 in the all-around on Saturday. His meet was highlighted by a rings routine that tied for first place at 13.8, as well as a high bar score of 13.5 that was good for third overall. The California native also finished top-nine courtesy of a seventh-place result on the floor exercise at 13.6 and a score of 12.4 on the parallel bars that was tied for ninth.
This is the second career ECAC laurel for McVay in his young career. As a team, this is the fourth award bestowed upon a Navy gymnast over the first month of the 2018 season: David Toussaint (Jan. 16 – Rookie); Andy Jones (Jan. 30 – Specialist); McVay (Jan. 30, Feb. 6 – Rookie)
McVay and the Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 10 with a neutral site competition versus service academy rivals Air Force and Army at the 2018 All-Academy Championship in San Antonio, Texas.
