In total, 42 gymnasts will be competing after qualifying according to their all-around placements, Men's Program Committee's points ranking system and/or placing amongst the top three gymnasts on an apparatus.

On Thursday afternoon, Tang recorded an all-around score of 77.55 in session one of the two session preliminary competition. He posted a 13.25 on the floor exercise, a 11.3 on the pommel horse, 13.0 on the rings, 13.8 on the vault, 13.35 on the parallel bars and 12.85 on the high bar.

Following the two-day competition, the top four ranked all-around athletes will automatically qualify for the 2017 senior national team.
