Tang Named CGA National Gymnast of the Week
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – On Tuesday afternoon it was announced that Jonny Tang (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) was the Collegiate Gymnastics Association National Gymnast of the Week before the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) named him the conference’s Corvias Men’s Gymnast of the Week a short time later. He was joined as an ECAC honoree with teammate Tanner West (Fr., Cypress, Texas), who was selected as the ECAC Specialist of the Week. Tang and West drew the attention of the CGA and ECAC for their respective efforts in Navy’s upset win over No. 9 Air Force on Friday night.
Tang led the Mids to the dramatic upset victory on Senior Night with 82.0 cumulative points as an all-around competitor. The senior recorded the best floor exercise score with a 14.4 before ranking third on the parallel bars with a 14.25. Tang finished fifth overall amongst a talented field of Air Force and William & Mary gymnasts on both the pommel horse and rings with respective scores of 13.2 and 13.7.
West completed a personal sweep of all three ECAC weekly awards this season with Tuesday’s Specialist of the Week accolade. Competing on the rings and parallel bars for the Mids on Friday night, West finished second overall on both apparatuses as he scored a 14.0 on the rings before garnering a 14.35 score on the parallel bars.
