ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The Navy gymnastics team will compete in its first championship event of the season this weekend when it travels to Williamsburg, Va., for the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Division Championships.
The two-day event will take place on the campus of William & Mary at Kaplan Arena. Action will begin Friday at 6 p.m. with the team and all-around finals, while the individual finals will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
No. 11 Air Force, Arizona State, SUNY Brockport, Springfield and Washington will join Navy and host 12th-ranked William & Mary at this year's event.
Navy at the USAG Championships
The Midshipmen have won the USAG Collegiate Division Championships three times, most recently in 2008. Navy also won in 2000 and 1998. Led by Andrew Faulk's all-around title last season, the Midshipmen placed third with a 326.9.
Eleven Midshipmen have been crowned champions a total of 23 times at the annual event. Chris Junghans took first place on the pommel horse last season as he became the first Mid to capture a first-place medal at the USAG Championships since Dylan Parrott won the floor exercise and high bar in 2010.
Against the Competition
Navy has seen every team but Washington at some point this season. Navy has met William & Mary more times than any other team this season as the two programs competed in three dual meets and also at the Navy Open and West Point Open.
The Mids placed ahead of Springfield and SUNY Brockport at the Navy Open on Jan. 19. At the West Point Open on Feb. 1, Navy topped both Arizona State and SUNY Brockport, but finished behind Springfield. Air Force won the All-Academy Championships on Feb. 16, while Navy placed third.
The Last Time Out
Navy scored a 405.0 in a triangular meet against Temple and Army last Saturday. The Mids defeated the Black Knights, which scored a 403.8, but fell to Temple, which posted a 417.35. Eric Viscardi
posted the highest-individual score in the vault, registering at 14.7.
