June 5, 2014

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy student-athletes Joshua Steves and Ellen Bradford were named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Division I at-large team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Steves, a member of the gymnastics team, was selected to the Men’s All-America Second Team, while Bradford, a participant on the women’s swimming team, was honored on the Women’s All-America Third Team.

The at-large team of the Capital One Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women, bowling, crew, field hockey for women and volleyball and wrestling for men.

The duo of Steves and Bradford gives Navy two of the four total Patriot League representatives on the two at-large teams. Loyola’s men’s lacrosse player Joe Fletcher was named to the men’s second team, while Kristen Barta, a swimmer from Army, was listed on the women’s third team.

Steves, a rising senior from Houston, Texas, is a leading member on the Navy gymnastics team. In February at the All-Academy Championshups, he became the first Mid in school history to record a score of 15.0+ on the rings. For his performance at the 2014 USAG Collegiate Championships, Steves earned two USAG All-America accolades (rings and vault). He previously garnered a spot on the 2013 All-ECAC Team for his second-place efforts on the vault that year and participated in the NCAA Qualifying Meet as both a sophomore and junior. In the classroom, Steves was tabbed as a First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete in both 2012 and `13 by the College Gymnastics Association. His major is Mathematics (Honors) and currently holds a 3.98 GPA.

Steves is one of just two gymnasts nationally named to the three squads. He joins Michael Newburger of Ohio State, who was selected as the Academic All-American of the Year.  In the history of Navy gymnastics, Steves becomes the third student-athlete to be named a Capital One Academic All-American, joining Sean Blackman (third team, 2006) and Pete Lombard (first team, 1998).

Bradford, a rising junior from Knoxville, Tenn., has been a key contributor for the Navy women’s swimming and diving program over her first two seasons as a Midshipmen. The 2014 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her sport, Bradford has garnered First-Team All-Patriot League honors in both of her seasons on The Yard. She has qualified for the championship final in each of the six individual events she has competed in at the league meet, winning the 200 breast crown this year and finishing in second place in the 100 breast as both a freshman and sophomore. Bradford and the Mids have won Patriot League team titles in both 2013 and `14. Her major is Systems Engineering and currently holds a 4.00 GPA.

Bradford is one of 16 swimmers recognized on the three teams of Academic All-Americans this year. She is the fifth member of the Navy swimming and diving program to be named a Capital One Academic All-American joining Laura Gorinski (second team, 2013), Kelly Zahalka (first team, 2008 and ’09, third team, 2007), Leanne Fielding (second team, 1988), Cheryl Dolyniuk (second team, 1983).

Navy's four Capital One Academic All-America honors this year gives the Naval Academy 99 selections all-time, with 66 of them coming since the 1999-00 academic year.
