Death of Midshipman First Class Austin T. Zalik

The Naval Academy family is saddened by the loss of Midshipman 1st Class Austin T. Zalik, 21, of Allentown, Pa., who died of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on Interstate 78 in Greenwich Twp., Berks County Pa., Friday morning, Aug. 3. Midshipman Zalik was on summer leave from the Academy. The cause of the accident is currently being investigated by local authorities.

"The Naval Academy is deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss. Our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to Austin's family and friends during this very difficult time," said Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller.

Midshipman Zalik was member of the 9th Company and an ocean engineering major at the Academy. He was a member of the Navy Gymnastics team and was selected as Captain of the team for the upcoming season. Information about funeral services will be released as it becomes available.
