Colin Payne Joins Navy Coaching Staff

Oct. 11, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Kip Simons, head coach of the Navy gymnastics team, announced on Wednesday the addition of Colin Payne to the Mids' coaching staff for the upcoming 2017-18 season. Payne joins the Naval Academy program after years of success in the youth ranks, including his most recent stop at the noted Bart Connor Gymnastics Academy.

"I am extremely excited to announce the addition of Colin Payne to our coaching staff and the Navy Gymnastics Family," remarked Simons. "Colin has been around the program for just brief time and he has made an immediate impact on our student athletes. Colin brings passion and has a well-trained technical eye for the development of gymnasts."

A member of the coaching staff at the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy for over five years beginning in July 2012, Payne had a first-hand role in the growth and maturation of numerous future and current NCAA gymnasts. Above and beyond DI athletes, Payne coached Jordan Kovach, a member of the United States Junior National Team, while Kovach was at BCGA.

Prior to coaching in Oklahoma, Payne worked at the Harpeth School of Gymnastics near Nashville, Tennessee during the 2011-12 school year.

"I am very excited to be joining the Navy gymnastics coaching staff," said Payne. "I feel fortunate to be working alongside such seasoned and knowledgeable coaches as Kip Simons and Craig Holt. I am extremely eager to share my passion for the sport with the dedicated and talented athletes at the Naval Academy. I am also equally excited about the opportunity to help mentor and develop midshipmen through the physical mission of the Naval Academy as a Professor of the Physical Disciplines."

A native of Hendersonville, Tenn., Payne is a 2017 graduate from the University of Oklahoma. Payne earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology.

Payne joins a Navy program that is coming off of back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances as a team. After winning the ECAC Championship in 2016 for the first time since 1989, the Mids repeated their trip to the premier collegiate championship as an automatic qualifier with the 12th-best scoring average in the NCAA standings. At the 2016 national meet, Navy outscored Cal and finished with 400.65 points to rank 11th overall. All-time, Navy has now reached the national championship on three occasions (2009, 2016 and 2017).
