Russell to be Inducted into Connecticut Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Russell began the 2004 season as a backup at goalkeeper and ended the year as a First-Team All-American.

Dominated the national scene as one of the most successful players in the draw circle ... finished the year ranked No. 2 in the country with a 67.6 face-off winning percentage ... won 173 of the 256 draws he took ... his 173 wins set a Navy single-season record, bettering the previous record held by Max Grant (1987) by almost 20 ... ranks second on the Mids' career face-offs leader board with 226 wins ... trails record holder Chris Dingman (2000-03) by just 32 wins ... was particularly successful in the NCAA Tournament where he won 55 of the 75 (.733) face-offs he took ... won better than 50 percent of the draws in all but three games (Bucknell 7-16, Georgetown 0-5, Johns Hopkins 6-14) ... produced a career-high 20 face-off wins against Syracuse (20-for28, .714) ... three times during the season, he lost just one face-off in the game (Lafayette 5-6, Colgate 14-15, Cornell 12-13) ... earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors after dominating the league in face-offs ... led the conference, winning 72.5 percent (79-for-109) of his attempts in the circle ... ranked No. 10 in the nation in ground balls per game, averaging 5.81 per outing ... set a Navy single-season record with 93 ground balls ... picked up double-digit grounders in four games during the year, including 12 against Ohio State ... just four ground balls from entering Navy's career top-20 grounders list ... owns 117 during his career and is 97 off the record holder John Duthie (1988-91) who scooped up 214 ... became more of a scoring threat by virtue of his success in the circle ... scored four goals and added a pair of assists for six points ... scored his first-collegiate goal in a two-goal effort in the Mids' overtime victory at North Carolina ... also scored against arch rival Army and Holy Cross ... produced his two assists against Hobart (regular season) and Syracuse in the National Championship Game.

Alongside teammate Chris Dingman, served as one of the Mids' primary face-off specialists ... helped lead Navy to a No. 14 NCAA ranking in face-offs, as the Mids produced a 53.9 winning percentage (124-for-145) ... ranks ninth in Navy history with 53-career face-off victories ... second in the ECAC Lacrosse League in face-off percentage (league games only), winning 55.3 percent of the draws ... overall he produced a 55.3 face-off percentage, claiming 47 wins out of the 85 attempts ... had his most impressive contest at Stony Brook where he won 14 of the 16 draws ... took 7-of-9 face-offs in the opener against Marist, while winning 60 percent of the draws against traditionally-strong UMBC ... notched his first collegiate assist in Navy's opener against Marist ... tallied 24 ground balls, including a career-high eight at Stony Brook ... added six against Marist.

Played in three contests -- St. Joseph's, North Carolina and Georgetown ... in all three games, he took face-offs ... owned a 60 percent face-off winning percentage, winning six of the 10 draws in which he took ... won 5-of-7 in the Mids' season opener against St. Joseph's, went 0-for-1 at North Carolina and was 1-of-2 against the Hoyas.

Lettered three times in lacrosse and twice in soccer at Hamburg High School ... earned All-America lacrosse honors as a midfielder his senior season ... also named All-ECIC and All-Western New York his junior and senior campaigns ... member of the Empire Team his junior year ... member of the National Honor Society ... son of Thomas and Christine Pieczonka.
