CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Following a spectacular 10-point performance in Navy’s men’s lacrosse opener against VMI over the weekend, Navy senior attack man Sam Jones (Annapolis, Md.) has been Navy the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. In addition to Jones, Bucknell’s Jackson Place (defense) and Sam Grinberg (goalkeeper) along with Loyola’s Romar Dennis (rookie) were among those players recognized by the conference office as players of the week at their respective positions.
Jones, who has put together an astounding 27 points on 16 goals and 11 assists in his four appearances against VMI, has had his top two point-producing games over his career against the Keydets. As a sophomore, Jones posted nine points on five goals and four assists. On Saturday, he rewrote his career high with four goals and six assists in an 18-goal effort by the Midshipmen.
The 10 points are the most scored by a Navy player since 1991 when Dennis Nealon scored 12 (4-8) against Washington College.
With his career-high performance, Jones made the jump from 26th to 21st on Navy’s career scoring list with 112 points (tied with Adam Borcz, 1998-01). He also moved into Navy’s all-time top 20 assists list with 46 (T18 with Owen McFadden).
Jones is Navy’s first player to receive offensive player of the week recognition by the conference office since he nabbed the honor on March 26, 2012, when he turned in a three-goal, two-assist performance against Colgate including scoring the game-winning goal as time expired.
The Mids will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to Georgetown. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Those fans unable to attend the game can tune in to the radio broadcast (WNAV 1430AM / 99.9FM) with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller calling the action.
