Game Day Storylines

Scene Setter:  After opening its season on the road this past Tuesday against #8 Johns Hopkins, Navy (0-1, 0-0 Patriot League) will play host to #2 Maryland  (0-0, 0-0 Big Ten) on Saturday in the Mids’ home opener.  Faceoff is slated for 12:00 PM at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Follow the Action:  Saturday’s contest will be carried live by 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst handling the call. Coverage begins with the Navy Lacrosse Pregame Show at 11:45 AM. The game will also be streamed online for FREE via PatriotLeague.TV, while live stats will be available at
Home Sweet Home:  2017 marks the 56th season Navy will play at least one game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium where it has amassed a 128-78 record. The Mids have played all of its home games at the stadium since the beginning of the 2004 campaign.
Fact or Fiction:  Prior to this year, Navy has never opened its season with back-to-back games against teams ranked in the top 10. FACT! While Navy has played its first two games against ranked foes (5 previous occasions), it has never played its first two games against teams ranked in the top 10. Navy’s opener against #8 Johns Hopkins marked the first time it has opened its season against a ranked team since 2000 (W, 11-2, vs. #11 UMBC). It was the first time since 1991 (L, 14-7 vs. #3 Virginia) that it opened its season against a team ranked among the top 10.
Poll Position:  Navy opened the season ranked #10 in the USILA Poll and #11 in the Maverik Media Poll. It’s the second straight season Rick Sowell’s Mids have opened the year among the national rankings (#18 a year ago). However, it’s the first time Navy has been ranked among the top 10 to start the season since 2007 when it stood #9 in the USILA rankings.
The Rankings:  For the 43rd time in the last 45 years, Navy will play a team ranked in the top 5 when it meets Maryland on Saturday. The only two years Navy did not face a foe ranked among the top 5 were 2000 and 2015. It’s the 23rd time Navy and Maryland will meet when both have been ranked in the top 10, including the second straight season. Last year the Terps stood #5 and the Mids were #7. It’s only the second time since 2009 that Navy and Maryland have met when both were ranked.
Mids Picked Second:  Winners of back-to-back Patriot League regular-season titles, Navy has been picked to finish second in the league behind defending Patriot League Tournament Champion Loyola.
Young Team Must Grow Up Quickly:  Four Navy players earned their first career starts in Tuesday’s opener - attackmen Chris Hill and Ryan Wade, defenseman Steve Hincks and goalkeeper Ryan Kern. Meanwhile, two starters, midfielders Colin Flounlacker and Dave Little, haven’t been in the starting rotation in two years and defenseman Michael Strack had just one start to his credit coming in.
