CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy junior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan (Ridgewood, N.J.) received Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday following his performance on Saturday which helped lead the Midshipmen to a 20-7 season-opening victory over VMI. In addition to Kiernan, Colgate’s Jimmy Ryan (offense), Lehigh’s Matt Poillon (goalkeeper) and Bucknell’s Thomas Flibotte (rookie) were among those players recognized by the conference office as players of the week at their respective positions.
Kiernan anchored a defensive effort that held VMI to just one goal over the first 30 minutes of action, as Navy jumped out to an 11-1 lead at the half. Navy’s defense held the Keydets off the scoreboard for the first 14 minutes of the game (0:55) and then over a 23-minute span that stretched across the first three quarters. As one of the nation’s top long poles, Kiernan marked the Keydets’ top returning scorer from 2012 in senior Russell East, holding him scoreless while on the field.
Kiernan paced Navy with six ground balls and caused two of VMI’s 25 turnovers on the afternoon.
This is the third time Kiernan has received Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors during his career after twice being honored a year ago.
The Midshipmen return to action on Friday when they play host to Detroit in what will be the inaugural meeting between one of the most storied programs and one of the sport’s newest. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Those unable to attend the game can tune in to Navy All-Access (subscription) to hear and see the action.
