Varello Garners Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week Honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy’s Joe Varello (Sr / Kings Park, N.Y.) earned his first career Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week citation following his performance against #1 Maryland on Saturday. In addition to Varello, Bucknell’s Will Sands (offense), Loyola’s Foster Huggins (defense) Army’s AJ Barretto (goalkeeper) and Colgate’s Mike Hawkins (rookie) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Patriot League Players of the Week at their respective positions.
Making his first appearance of the season and the first of his career as the Mids’ front-line specialist, Varello won 12 of the 18 draws against the top-ranked Terps. The 12 wins were a career high, bettering his previous mark of 11 wins against VMI his rookie campaign. The 18 attempts also marked a career best, topping his 16 against the Keydets in 2015.
The performance also enabled him to become the 15th player in program history to reach 100 faceoff wins in a career, as he moved into the top 15 of the Mids’ all-time faceoff wins list with 101. He trails 14th-place Evan McGoogan (2010-13) by seven and is 53 outside of the top 10.
The Mids (0-2, 0-0 Patriot League) will be back in action on Saturday when they face UMBC (1-0) in their home opener. The second game in a men’s and women’s (Columbia, 11:00 am) doubleheader, the men’s game is set for a 1:30 pm faceoff at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
