Durden Garners Men’s Lax Patriot League Rookie of the Week Honors
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy long-stick midfielder Jeff Durden (Fr / Cumming, Ga.) earned his first career Patriot League Rookie of the Week citation following his performance against UMBC on Saturday. In addition to Duden, Colgate’s Griffin Brown (offense) and Collin Orr (faceoff specialist) and Loyola’s Foster Huggins (defense) and Jacob Stover (goalkeeper) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Patriot League Players of the Week at their respective positions.
Stepping into role occupied the last three seasons by two-time All-American Matt Rees, Durden has already made his mark for Rick Sowell’s Midshipmen in the early-going. Navy’s’ leader in ground balls this season with 10, he also stands atop the Mids’ caused turnovers list alongside starting close defensemen Hiram Carter (Sr / Apopka, Fla.) and Michael Strack (Sr / North Babylon, N.Y.).
Durden paced the Mids in last Saturday’s win over UMBC by grabbing a team-high five ground balls and forcing Retrievers’ starting middie Billy Nolan to turn the ball over four times. The rookie played a pivotal role in the defense’s effort in the third and fourth quarters that held UMBC off the scoreboard for better than 15 minutes, while the Mids went on a 3-0 run en route to a 7-5 win.
Durden is Navy’s first defensive player (outside of a goalkeeper) to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors and the 12th different Navy player since capture the honor since the Mids joined the league in 2004. Two current players garnered rookie of the week recognition previously - sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Kern (Middletown, Del.) and senior attackman Jack Ray (Wyckoff, N.J.).
The Mids (1-2, 0-0 Patriot League) open Patriot League play on Saturday when they travel to Boston (1-1, 0-0 PL) to battle the Terriers at Nickerson Field beginning at 1:00 pm. A free live video stream will be available on PatriotLeague.TV, while the game will also be carried live on 1500 WFED, as well as 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Joe Miller on the call.
