Patriot League Honors Navy Faceoff Specialist Joe Varello
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy's Joe Varello (Sr / Kings Park, N.Y.) put together career numbers for a third consecutive week to earn his second Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week citation this season following his performance against Boston University in the Mids' conference opener. In addition to Varello, Bucknell's Will Sands (offense) and Christian Klipstein (goalkeeper), Colgate's Mike Hawkins (rookie) and Loyola's Brian Begley (defense) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Patriot League Players of the Week at their respective positions.
Varello played a spectacular game against the Terriers on Saturday, winning 14 of the 22 draws, including nine (of 12) in the second half. The first-year starter also scooped up a career-high 10 ground balls, shattering his previous best of five against Delaware a year ago.
Varello stands #4 nationally and #1 in the Patriot League in faceoff percentage, winning 69.1 percent (38-55) of the draws he's taken in three contests. Additionally, he is ranked #21 in ground balls, averaging 5.67 per game.
Heading into the weekend, Varello stands 13th on the Mids' career faceoff wins list with 127 and trails 11th-place Frankie Coppola (2006-10) and Chris Messineo (1994-97) by 12. Varello needs 27 wins to join the school's top 10.
The Mids (2-2, 1-0 Patriot League) return to conference action on Saturday when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to face 20th-ranked Bucknell (3-1, 1- PL). Faceoff is set for 1:00 pm at Christy Mathewson Stadium. Live stats, as well as a free video stream will be available on NavySports.com.
