Game Day Storylines

Scene Setter: Winners of two in a row, Navy will look to extend its winning streak when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday afternoon to face 20th-ranked Bucknell. Faceoff is set for 1:00 pm at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Mids, who enter the game 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Patriot League action, are led by seventh-year head coach Rick Sowell, while the 3-1 Bison are under the direction of 13th-year head coach Frank Fedorjaka. Saturday’s contest marks the 18th meeting in a series that Navy leads, 9-8.
Follow the Action: Saturday’s contest will be carried live by 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller handling the call. Coverage begins with the Navy Lacrosse Pregame Show at 12:45 pm. The game will also be streamed online for FREE via PatriotLeague.TV, while live stats will be available at NavySports.com.
Getting Back On Track: Navy earned a huge 10-8 win over Boston University on the road a week ago in both teams’ Patriot League opener. It marked the 11th time in its 15 years of being a member of the Patriot League that Navy opened league play on the road. It was also the Mids’ first win in a Patriot League opener since defeating Lehigh (8-3) on the road on March 6, 2010. The Mids are now 6-9 all-time in Patriot League openers.
Fact or Fiction: Senior Joe Varello is ranked among the nation’s top 5 in faceoff winning percentage.  FACT! Varello stands #4 nationally with his 69.1 winning percentage.  He has won 38 of the 55 draws he has taken this season. Heading into the weekend, he is ranked 13th on the Mids’ career wins list with 127.
May I assist You?: Junior midfielder Ryan Wade has dealt out an assist in each of the last 11 games.  Meanwhile, 34 of the 46 goals Greyson Torain has scored over his career have been unassisted, including 4 of 6 this season.
Varello Honored Once Again: Senior Joe Varello was named the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks thanks to a career-setting performance against Boston U. last Saturday. He won a career-best 14 draws (of 22), including 9 of 12 in the second half.  The first-year starter also scooped up a career-high 10 ground balls, shattering his previous best of five against Delaware a year ago.
Extra, Extra: Navy is still looking for its first extra-man goal of the 2018 season. The Mids are 0 for 6 this spring. Last year Navy scored just 7 extra-man goals on 24 attempts.

Scouting the Bison
• Bucknell (3-1, 1-0 Patriot League) enters Saturday’s contest ranked 20th nationally after dealing then 18th-ranked Colgate a 13-10 loss in its Patriot League opener last Saturday.  The Bison won their first two games of the season (11-9 vs. Marist, 14-12 at Bryant), followed by a one-goal loss to Richmond (9-8).
• The Bison have done a phenomenal job of taking care of the ball this season, averaging 10.50 turnovers per game which are the fifth fewest on a national level.
• All-Patriot League senior attackman Will Sands has been sensational this season, producing 27 points on 10 goals and a team-best 17 assists.  He stands #4 nationally in both points per game (6.75) and assists per game (4.25).  
• Senior attackman Connor O’Hara has 13 points on a team-best 13 goals, while senior middie Sean O’Brien has 10 points on 10 goals. O’Hara leads the league in shooting percentage (54.2) and stands 16th nationally in goals per game (3.25).
• Two-time All-Patriot League goalkeeper Christian Klipstein has had an up and down year, sharing time with rookie Ben Clark.  Klipstein owns an 11.85 goals-against average and 48.3 save percentage, while Clark has seen action in a pair of contests and boasts a 6.50 GAA and 57.1 save percentage.
• Jarett Witzal has taken all but one draw for the Bison this season, winning 46.9 percent (45-96) of the draw he has taken.
• Bucknell’s extra-man unit has scored on 7 of its 17 opportunities (41.2), while the man-down unit has given up 6 goals on 16 chances (62.5).

Navy vs. Bucknell - The Series
• Saturday’s contest between Navy and Bucknell marks the 18th game in a series that began in 1996. Navy owns a 9-8 advantage in the series thanks to a 13-7 win over the Bison last March in Annapolis. Bucknell has won six of the last 10 games, but the Mids have bested the Bison two years in a row, including by a 13-6 count in their last trip to Lewisburg in 2016.
• Eight of the 17 games in the series have been decided by one goal, including six of the last 11. Three of the eight one-goal contests have entered into extra minutes. In 2010, midfielder Patrick Moran stuck his shot 1:20 into overtime to lead the Mids to an 8-7 OT win.Meanwhile, in 2011 Navy scored four goals in the fourth, including a pair by Nikk Davis in the final 18 seconds of the game to send it into overtime. Then-rookie Todd Heritage, however, found an opening and scored the game-winner for the Bison.
• The Bison own a 5-3 lead over Navy in games played in Lewisburg.

• Navy will hold its annual Meet the Mids event following its game against Loyola on Saturday, March 17 at 1:30 pm.
• Members of the Navy lacrosse team will be available for autographs on the Blue Concourse, with the first 300 kids in line for the postgame autograph session receiving a Navy lacrosse “Meet the Mids” t-shirt, compliments of Annapolis area Papa John’s and Chick-fil-A.
