CENTER VALLEY, Pa. —  Navy lacrosse players Joe Varello (Sr / Kings Park, N.Y.) and Michael Strack (Sr / North Babylon, N.Y.) were named the Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, following their career performances against 20th-ranked Bucknell Saturday afternoon. In addition to the Navy tandem, Boston University’s Joe McSorley (goalkeeper) and Loyola’s Pat Spencer (offense) and Kevin Lindley (rookie) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as Patriot League Players of the Week at their respective positions.

Varello has either matched or eclipsed his career high in faceoff wins in each of the last four weeks, as he earns his third faceoff specialist of the week citation (2.12, 2.26 and 3.3) this season.

After struggling in the opening quarter (2 of 7) against the Bison, he went on to win 13 of the final 18 draws in the game including all five in the fourth quarter.  He finished the game with a career-best 15 wins (of 25) and in doing so moved into 11th on the Mids’ all-time wins list with 142. He is just 12 wins shy of joining Navy’s all-time top 10 wins list. The first-year starting specialist stands seventh nationally in faceoff win percentage, winning 66.3 percent (53-80) of the draws he has taken this season.

Strack, meanwhile, earns his first weekly honor from the conference office as the cornerstone of Navy’s defensive unit that held Bucknell to four goals over the final 45 minutes of the contest and scoreless over the final 14:12 in a 13-8 victory. Individually, he held Tewaaraton Award Watch List member Will Sands no goals, one assist and three shots in the contest, while forcing his foe into a team-high 4 turnovers. Sands came into the contest ranked fourth in the country in both points per game (6.75) and assists per game (4.25).

The Mids (3-2, 2-0 Patriot League) will step aside from conference action on Tuesday when they travel to Sparks, Md. to face 17th-ranked Penn (2-2).  Faceoff is set for 7:00 pm at Tierney Field. The game will be carried on 1430 AM / 99.9 FM WNAV with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller on the call, while live stats will be available on Navy’s web site.
