CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –– United States Lacrosse has confirmed Navy’s six-overtime contest at North Carolina last Saturday is the longest game in college lacrosse history. The Tar Heels defeated Navy, 11-10, in a game that spanned six overtime periods and 83 minutes and 39 seconds of play.
Research efforts by the U.S. Lacrosse staff in Baltimore turned up two five-overtime games in the records; ironically, both games were played in Ithaca, N.Y. In 1973, Cornell defeated Penn, 9-8, in quintuple overtime and in 1988, Massachusetts defeated Cornell, 8-7, in five extra frames.
Navy (2-1, 1-0 ECAC) will play host to Massachusetts Saturday in a crucial Eastern College Athletic Conference match-up. Face-off at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium is set for 12 noon. The game can also be heard over the air waves and on the internet. Bob Socci will call all the action on WNAV (AM-1430) in Annapolis. For those listeners not in the greater Annapolis area, Socci's call of the game can be heard via the internet at http://www.wnav.com(.)
