CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy junior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan (Ridgewood, N.J.) has been named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, while teammate T.J. Hanzsche (Berwyn, Pa.) garnered Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors after guiding the Midshipmen to a 12-11 victory over Lafayette on Saturday. In addition to Kiernan and Hanzsche, Lafayette’s Brian Bock (offense) and Bucknell’s Kyle Feeney (goalkeeper) were among those players recognized by the conference office as players of the week at their respective positions.
Earning his third defensive player of the week citation this season, Kiernan nearly doubled his season total of caused turnovers with a career high seven in leading the Mids to their first Patriot League win of the season. As a team, Navy caused 11 Leopard turnovers in the contest. The junior long pole also helped the Mids win 14 of the game’s 26 faceoffs by picking up seven ground balls, many of which came from the wing on draws.
Hanzsche made his first collegiate start in Saturday’s contest and the rookie attackman did not disappoint. He netted a hat trick on five shots and finished with four points in the Mids’ win. Hanzsche, who played sparingly against VMI and Bucknell, scored the last two goals of the third quarter, including a buzzer-beater after a Lafayette turnover that gave Navy an 8-7 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
Hanzsche is the first Navy player to earn rookie of the week honors since April 4, 2011 when Tucker Hull (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up the award for the second time.
The Midshipmen return to action tonight when they play host to Towson. Game time is slated for 7:00 pm at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Those unable to attend the game can tune in to the radio broadcast (WNAV 1430AM / 99.9FM) with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller calling the action. The game will also be streamed live via Navy All-Access (subscription) on Navy’s web site, www.NavySports.com.
