Little and Dove Receive Accolades for Record-Setting Performances
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — Navy junior Dave Little (Vienna, Va.) and senior Brady Dove (Stevensville, Md.) were named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive and Faceoff Players of the Week, respectively, following their record-breaking performances that helped lead the Midshipmen to a 14-9 victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon. Little was also named the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
Little’s performance against the Mountain Hawks was cause for celebration as the first-year starter shattered the 74-year-old single-game Navy record with nine goals on a remarkable nine shots. It’s the most goals scored in a single game in NCAA Division I this season and is tied for 18th most in a Division I game all-time. The previous school record for goals in a game was set by Robert Booze who scored eight against Drexel on March 27, 1943. Little’s mark also broke the Patriot League single-game record of eight accomplished by six different players, including most recently by Bucknell’s Todd Heritage against Hobart on March 10, 2012.
Little came into the game having scored multiple goals just three times in 24 games, including one hat trick (4 goals) which was in his collegiate debut on Feb. 8, 2015 against VMI. He entered the game with 17 career goals, including eight this season.
Little, who also scored one goal and added an assist in last Tuesday’s victory over Dartmouth, is the first Navy player to earn offensive player of the week recognition since Casey Rees who earned the award on April 18, 2016.
Earning his his fifth career Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week citation and second this season, Dove made history of his own when he tied a school record by winning 21 of the 25 faceoffs he took against Lehigh’s Conor Gaffney, who came into the game ranked #9 nationally (63.3) and was also ranked #3 in ground balls per game (9.57- he had 2). En route to his 21 faceoff wins, Dove picked up a school-record 17 ground balls which are the most by any player in Div. I this season. On his second faceoff win and ground ball of the day, he became the first player in school history and one of five in Patriot League history with 300 career ground balls. Dove currently stands #2 on the all-time Patriot League list with 315.
In addition to Little and Dove, Army West Point’s Johnny Surdick (defense), Bucknell’s Christian Klipstein (goalkeeper) and Boston University’s John MacLean (rookie) were among those players recognized by the league office on Monday as players of the week at their respective positions. Navy’s Matt Rees (Sr / LSM / Sykesville, Md.), Army West Point’s AJ Barretto (GK) and Bucknell’s Will Sands (A) were honorable mention selections.
