CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- After anchoring a spectacular defensive effort by the Navy men's lacrosse team on Saturday in a 7-6 double-overtime loss to No. 1-ranked Loyola, sophomore John Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) has been named the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week. In addition to Connors, Lehigh's Dan Taylor (offense) and Tripp Telesco (defense) along with Holy Cross' Kevin Lux (rookie) were among those players recognized by the conference office as players of the week at their respective positions.
Connors played perhaps his best game in a Navy uniform on Saturday and was the backbone of Navy's defense that held the Greyhounds to their lowest scoring output (7 goals) of the season. Navy is one of just two teams (Army) this season to hold Loyola to single digits, as the Greyhounds came into the weekend ranked fifth nationally in goals per game (13.70).
A first-year starter, Connors faced 36 shots and turned aside 14, marking the second most saves of his career (17 vs. Georgetown this season).
Connors is Navy's first player to receive goalkeeper of the week recognition by the conference office since April 23, 2012, when RJ Wickham turned in an 18-save performance in leading the Midshipmen to an 8-2 rout over sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins in Navy's season finale.
The Mids will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to West Point to battle the Black Knights in the annual Army-Navy Star Game. Faceoff is slated for 2:00 pm at Michie Stadium and will be televised live by CBS Sports Network. The game will be also carried live by WNAV 1430 AM / 99.9 FM with Pete Medhurst and Joe Miller on the call.
