CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy junior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan (Ridgewood, N.J.), a three-time Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week selection this spring, has been named to the 26-player 2013 All-Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Team. This is the second straight year Kiernan has garnered All-Patriot League honors, picking up second team recognition as a sophomore while being named to the first team this spring.
Among the 26 student-athletes who made up this year's All-Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Team, there were 12 first-team selections and 14 named to the second team. Twenty-four of the 26 will be participating in this weekend's tournament, including four of the five major award winners.
The third-seeded Army Black Knights were awarded both the offensive (John Glesener, So., A) and defensive players (Brendan Buckley, Sr., D) of the year, while Bucknell's Sean Doyle was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Lehigh sophomore Matt Poillon garnered goalkeeper-of-the-year honors for a second straight season.
Meanwhile, in his second season, Holy Cross' Jim Morrissey was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
Arguably one of the best long poles in the country, Kiernan is as versatile a player as any coach would want on his team. As the most experienced defensive player on the Mids' roster, he helped lead Navy to a No. 31 ranking in scoring defense this spring, giving up 10.23 goals per game. Kiernan, who is ranked 15th nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.00), helped anchor a squad that jumped from 41st in the country a year ago in caused turnovers to No. 4 this season as the Mids turned in 10.0 takeaways per game.
Kiernan's 26 caused turnovers this spring are the third most by a Navy player in program history, while he is the school's all-time leader in the category with 51.
Additionally, he paced Navy by picking up 5.23 ground balls per game and was ranked 29th nationally. That, too, was a category Navy improved upon by as the Mids were ranked 43rd a year ago (27.67) and this year they stand 29th (30.62).
Kiernan's 68 ground balls this season are the ninth most in Navy history and the most by a Navy player since 2008 when draw specialist Mikelis Visgauss grabbed 80. Meanwhile he is tied with Matt Pawlikowski (1990-93) for 15th on Navy's career ground balls list with 139.
Kiernan once again lent his expertise to the faceoff game where he either played one of the two wing positions or took the draw. He won 16 of the 37 faceoffs (.432) this season and is 19th on the Mids' career faceoff wins list with 24 wins.
Meanwhile, Kiernan kept Navy's streak of at least one pole scoring a goal or dealing out an assist every year since 1994 when he scored a goal in the Mids' 11-7 win over Detroit in the second game of the season.
On a national scale, he is one of just 12 active long poles who have produced 10-plus points over their career. With 12 points on nine goals and three assists, he is tied for ninth on the NCAA's active long pole career scoring list. Going into his senior year, he will be ranked third on the list.
