CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy senior midfielder Erik Hoffstadt (Dover, Del.) was one of 12 student-athletes named to the 2014 Men's Lacrosse Academic All-Patriot League Team it was announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office. Meanwhile, 2014 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Joe Fletcher of Loyola added to his lengthy list of awards this season by being named the 2014 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
An honors student majoring in systems engineering, Hoffstadt boasts a 3.98 grade-point average and is ranked 50th in his class of better than 1,000 students in overall order of merit which factors in both academic (22nd) and military (45th) achievements. He has been named to the Commandant's List in six of the seven semesters at the Academy, while earning Superintendent's List honors four times and Dean's List mention twice. Hoffstadt, who was named to last year's Men's Lacrosse Academic All-Patriot League Team, has also been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in each of the last two years.
Hoffstadt has been a starter at midfield in five of the 13 games this spring where he has generated five points on three goals and two assists. He punched in goals against Patriot League foes Bucknell, Holy Cross and Boston U., while dealing out a career-best two assists against Towson.
Eight of the league's nine schools that play men's lacrosse are represented on this year's Academic All-Patriot League Team, including Loyola, who led the league with three student-athletes including the scholar-athlete of the year. Additionally, Army and Bucknell put two on the team, while Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy each had one represented. Five of the 12 members who garnered academic honors also received All-Patriot League recognition a day earlier - Sam Grinberg (Bucknell), Terry McKenna (Holy Cross), Ty Souders (Lehigh), Joe Fletcher (Loyola) and Justin Ward (Loyola).
The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade-point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
