April 25, 2012

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- Navy senior faceoff specialist Logan West (Berlin, Md.) was one of 14 student-athletes named to the 2012 Men's Lacrosse Academic All-Patriot League Team it was announced Wednesday afternoon by the league office. Meanwhile, Army junior defenseman Brendan Buckley was named the 2012 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Majoring in systems engineering, West boasts a 3.33 grade-point average and is ranked in the top 26 percent of his graduating class of better than 1,000 students in overall order of merit which factors in both academic and military achievements. He has been named to the Commandant's List in five of the seven semesters at the Academy, while earning Dean's List honors twice and Superintendent's List mention once. West was also named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll a year ago.

West stands third all-time on the Mids' career faceoff wins leader board, having claimed 266 of the 565 draws he has taken. This season, he won 91 of the 219 faceoffs and led the team with 54 ground balls.

West, who will graduate from the Naval Academy on June 1, will be commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and will be stationed in San Diego, Calif., where he will begin his quest to become a Special Warfare Officer.

Six of the league's seven schools that play men's lacrosse are represented on this year's Academic All-Patriot League Team, including Colgate, who led the league with four student-athletes. Additionally, Army has three selections with Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh putting two on the team and West represented Navy. Six of the 14 members who garnered academic honors also received All-Patriot League recognition a day earlier - Brendan Buckley (Army), Mike Huffner (Bucknell), Peter Baum (Colgate), Robert Grabher (Colgate), Roman Lao-Gosney (Lehigh) and Ty Souders (Lehigh).

The Academic All-Patriot League Team was added for all sports beginning in the 2010-11 season to honor student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
