CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- 2011 All-American
Michael Hirsch (Schwensville, Pa.) was among the nine Navy men's lacrosse players who were named to the 2011 Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Academic Honor Roll released by the conference office.
Junior defensive midfielder Darren Pastrana (Edgewater, Md.) was the lone player among the nine honored who had previously received an honor roll nod, while two were among the starting line for the Mids and three were premiere specialists on the squad.
A product of St. Mary's High School, Pastrana was lauded for his academic success after registering a 3.80 GPA in applied mathematics this past spring. Pastrana, who boasts a 3.64 cumulative GPA, has been named to the Commandant's List all six semesters, while twice being named to the Dean's List. He has also been named to the Superintendent's List four times including both semesters of his junior year. He is ranked 107 in overall order of merit among the Class of 2012 (1,135 members) which factors in both academic (154 and military (98) order of merit.
Rookie Erik Hoffstadt (Dover, Del.), meanwhile, was one of nine players in the Patriot League who turned in a 4.00 GPA. Hoffstadt, who saw action in nine games primarily as a rider, has selected systems engineering as his field of study and stands No. 1 in his class (1,189 members) in academic order of merit. A two-time member of the Commandant's List, he has also appeared on the Dean's and Superintendent's Lists and is ranked 35th in overall order of merit.
Hirsch was one of four Navy seniors who earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, joining Kevin Doyle (Towson, Md.), Marty Gallagher (Wayne, Pa.) and Brian Striffler (Virginia Beach, Va.). Receiving his first All-America citation, Hirsch is the 272nd different player to garner the more than 425 All-America certificates in Navy lacrosse history. Not only was he the most veteran member of Navy's defensive unit this spring, the three-year starter was also assigned to the opponent's most prolific player throughout the 2011 campaign. After leading the Mids in caused turnovers in 2010 with 17, he once again recorded 17 takeaways to pace the Mids this season which included a career-high six against Colgate.
Hirsch recorded a 3.50 GPA in his final semester in Annapolis, marking his first appearance on the Dean's List and fourth on the Commandant's List. He graduated in May with a degree in systems engineering and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy.
Doyle recorded a 3.25 GPA in international Relations and was also commissioned an Ensign in the Navy, while Gallagher turned in a 3.38 systems engineering and will join Hirsch among the submarine community. Meanwhile, Striffler, a future surface warfare officer, recorded a 3.63 GPA in oceanography during the spring semester.
Starting attackman Taylor Reynolds (Babylon, N.Y.) achieved a 3.20 GPA in oceanography to make his inaugural appearance on the league's honor roll, while rising senior Logan West (Berlin, Md.), the Mids' faceoff specialist, posted a 3.60 GPA in systems engineering. Finally, reserve goalkeeper Paul Zimmerman (Homer, N.Y.) posted a 3.50 GPA in history to make his way onto the honor roll.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average during the spring semester. Student-athletes representing all four classes are eligible for the award.
