BALTIMORE, Md. — The Navy men’s lacrosse team will battle 2012 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinalist and Patriot League rival Colgate at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md. on March 23 as part of the 2013 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic it was announced by Inside Lacrosse Magazine on Monday. The Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic will feature the Mids and Raiders in the opener at 2:00 pm, followed by Virginia vs. Johns Hopkins at 4:30 pm.
Now in its seventh year, the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic gives fans the chance to celebrate the start of another season by placing many of the nation’s top-ranked teams in the same stadium on the same day. Four of the last six national champions have started their season’s in the Face-Off Classic: Johns Hopkins in 2007, Syracuse in 2008, Duke in 2010 and Virginia in 2011. Inside Lacrosse events have brought unprecedented excitement and fan interest to the regular season. Over the past six years, Inside Lacrosse has drawn more than 260,000 fans to its 13 events, including 55,354 fans to its three events in 2012.
“We couldn’t be more excited to participate in the 2013 Konica Minolta Face Off Classic,” said second-year Navy head coach Rick Sowell. “To have the opportunity to play before a national audience at such a premier venue, M&T Bank Stadium, against a strong conference opponent is what every coach asks for. Colgate had a great season last year and returns a very good team in 2013, if not better than the quarterfinal team of 2012. If this game is anything like last year’s, then the fans are in for a real treat. We are thrilled and honored to participate in this great event.”
While the Mids will be participating in the Face-Off Classic for the first time in program history, they are no strangers to an Inside Lacrosse-sponsored event or M&T Bank Stadium. Army and Navy battled one another in the 2009 and ‘10 editions of the Game of Rivals with the two teams splitting - Navy claimed an 8-4 win in the inaugural event in 2009, while the Black Knights edged the Mids, 7-6, a year later.
M&T Bank Stadium played host to one of the most celebrated weekends in Navy men’s lacrosse history when the Mids came up a goal short in their Cinderella run at the 2004 National Championship. Navy earned an 8-7 victory over eighth-ranked Princeton in the NCAA Semifinals, setting up just the second NCAA Championship appearance by the Mids. Fourth-ranked Syracuse would go on to break the hearts of Americans on Memorial Day with a 14-13 win over the crowd-favorite Midshipmen.
Navy owns an 11-4 series advantage over Colgate, winning three of the last four meetings. Each of the last five games between the two programs has been decided by one goal, including last year’s contest in which Sam Jones punched in the game-winner with just three seconds left in a 12-11 decision in Hamilton, N.Y.
