Potteiger started every match during his four years at Penn State and served as a three-year team captain while winning the prestigious Bill Jeffrey Award in 1999, the first sophomore to accomplish both landmarks in PSU's history. He was drafted in the 2002 MLS Super Draft by the New England Revolution.

As the goalkeeper coach at Messiah during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, the Falcons won a pair of NCAA Division III titles. He currently ranks sixth on the D-III all-time GAA list with a GAA of 0.39 in 7,449 minutes. In four NCAA Tourmaments, he had a 0.11 GAA and a 16-0-2 record.
