Derek Potteiger enters his fourth year as an assistant coach for the Navy men's soccer team, helping turn around the fortunes of the program.

Potteiger has been a central force in Navy's strong recruiting efforts the last three years and has helped Navy to back-to-back .500 seasons for the first time since the 2000 and 2001 campaigns. An outstanding recruiter, Potteiger has helped bring in an influx of talent to help Navy climb back towards the top of the Patriot League standings.

Prior to coming to Navy, Potteiger most recently served as the Cleveland City Stars Reserve Team head coach in 2008, following stints as the club director for the Ambassadors Futbol Club in Twinsburg, Ohio, and as the club director for the Harrisburg City Islanders Super Y program in 2005-07.

Potteiger was an outstanding college player at Penn State University, where he racked up several awards. While at Penn State, Potteiger started every match during his four years and was a two-time NSCAA All-American, as well as a four-time first-team All-Big 10 selection. He was a three-year captain and won the Bill Jeffrey Award in 1999, becoming the first sophomore to accomplish both landmarks in Penn State's storied soccer history.

Following his playing career, Potteiger was selected as the 43rd player taken in the 2002 MLS Super Draft by the New England Revolution. He played for seven seasons in the United Soccer League, playing two years with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2002-03), three years with the Harrisburg City Islanders (2004-06) and then two more years with the Cleveland City Stars (2007-08). He was an first-team all-league selection and was the team MVP for both the Riverhounds and City Stars. He was the team captain for Harrisburg City Islanders in 2004, his first year with the team.

Potteiger and his wife, Jennifer, have three girls, Alexis Marie (4), Rylee Grace (3) and Abagail Jane (born May 2, 2011). The family resides in Annapolis.
