Navy Downs Penn State in Exhibition Match, 2-1
Aug 24, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore forward Thomas Shiiba (Swarthmore, Pa.) scored in the 84th minute to lift Navy to a 2-1 win over Penn State in a men's soccer exhibition match on Saturday evening at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Navy got on the board in the fifth minute when sophomore forward Jamie Dubyoski (Catonsville, Md.) found the back of the net before Penn State's Kyle MacDonald evened the game at 1-1 in the 32nd minute.
Navy goalkeepers Aaron Dupere (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Gavin Snyder (Severna Park, Md.) each played one full half in the exhibition. Snyder played the second half and made a key save in the 79th minute to help keep the game at 1-1 before Shiiba's late tally.
"I was pleased with our performance tonight," head coach Dave Brandt said. "This was our first time out this season and we did some things well. We also know we will have to get better in some other areas and we'll need to continue to improve."
Saturday night's game was Navy's only exhibition match of 2013. Penn State, the 2012 Big Ten Regular Season Co-Champion, had tied No. 2 Maryland, 1-1, in an exhibition match last weekend.
Navy will open the 2013 season at Davidson on Friday, August 30 at 7:00 PM.
