ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's soccer team scored five first-half goals and cruised home in the second half en route to a 5-0 victory over Richmond on a picture-perfect night in front of 777 fans at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

The Mids improved to 2-2-1 on the season, while Richmond fell to 1-5-0. The Spiders' lone win this season came against James Madison, which last week knocked off No. 1-ranked North Carolina.

The Midshipmen's five goals were the most since scoring five in a 5-0 blanking of VMI on Sept. 4, 2010. Navy's five goals in the first half were the most in a half since scoring five in the second half of a 7-0 blanking of UMES on Oct. 24, 1995. Lastly, Navy's scoring output tied a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility record set by Navy against VMI in 2010 and Delaware last year against the Midshipmen.

"I thought we have played really well the last two weeks and haven't gotten a lot to show for it," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We have done a good job being patient and we knew the goals would start to come."

Navy wasted little time getting on the board as junior defenseman Nick Dubee (Carolina, R.I.) scored his first goal of the year in the seventh minute for a 1-0 Navy advantage. The goal was set up by an Alex Wilson (Jr. / Phoenix, Ariz.) corner kick that Dubee corralled on the left slot and sent a low, hard shot inside the right post for the game-winning tally.

Just six minutes later, junior Martin Sanchez (Salisbury, Md.) scored his first career goal with another assist to Wilson to give Navy a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute. Sanchez took a chip pass from Wilson, and connected on a shot into the top left corner from the right slot.

In the 22nd minute, Wilson then got into the act with his second goal of the season and fourth point of the evening as he took a through ball from Dubee and rocketed a blast from the right wing into the top corner for a 3-0 Navy advantage.

Grant Valenstein (So. / Laguna Hills, Calif.) then scored a goal in his second consecutive game as he took his own rebound from an initial shot that was saved and banged it home out of mid-air, slipping a shot inside the right post for a 4-0 cushion in the 32nd minute.

Navy's last goal came in the 43rd minute from sophomore Sean Gallagher (Westport, Conn.) as he sent a long shot that tipped off a Richmond defender past the Spiders' goalkeeper for his first career goal and points.

While Navy's offense had a breakout night, the Navy defense was stout, allowing just four shots for the entire evening. Two Ward Gavin (Matthews, N.C.) saves late in the second half were all that were needed by the Navy defense to preserve the shutout. Three goalies, Gavin Snyder (Jr. / Severna Park, Md.), Jackson Morgan (Fr. / Brecksville, Ohio) and Ward, combined for Navy's second shutout of the season, as the Mids allowed just one shot in the decisive first half.

Navy outshot the Spiders, 22-4, and drew nine corner kicks to Richmond's four. Navy was whistled for 15 fouls to Richmond's seven.

The Midshipmen will travel to Fairfax, Va., on Tuesday night to take on a strong George Mason squad, then returns next Saturday to host Lafayette in the Patriot League opener, beginning at 8:00 PM.
