BALTIMORE, Md. -- Freshman Luke Goldsborough (Westover, Md.) scored his first career goal just 1:48 into overtime to lift the Navy men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday afternoon. The win improves Navy's record to 6-5-0 overall, while the Greyhounds drop to 3-6-1 overall.

"We're slowly getting better and understanding the things that we need to do to be successful," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt. "We are still making our share of mistakes, but we are getting better on both ends of the field and that is obviously encouraging."

Three of Navy's six wins this year have come in overtime, and since the start of last year, Navy is 6-1-3 in extra-session games.

"I think that is merely coincidence. We keep playing the way in overtime the way we play in regulation," said Brandt. "We aren't changing anything. The only thing is that we are finishing our chances, I guess."

Goldsborough's goal came moments into overtime, when classmate Michael Uyehara (Agoura Hills, Calif.) sent a cross into the box, where Mark Garcia (Tempe, Ariz.) headed the ball toward the Loyola goalkeeper, Kyle Wittman. Wittman made the initial save, but the ball rebounded to Goldsborough, who simply tapped the ball into the net for the game-winning tally.

The assist was Garcia's 12th of his career, moving him into 11th on the school's career assist chart.

Meanwhile, six different players have now scored Navy's six game-winning goals this year. Goldsborough becomes the fifth freshman to score a game-winning goal this year, all of which have been that respective player's first career goal (Seth Stewart vs. Saint Joseph's; David Jackson vs. Mount St. Mary's; Michael Uyehara vs. Saint Francis (Pa.); Eric Wootten vs. Temple; and Goldsborough vs. Loyola (Md.)).

After a relatively uneventful first half, Navy took a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute. Uyehara played a ball to David Jackson (Forest, Va.), who sent a pass back to senior Chris Marino (Longwood, Fla.) in the top of the box. Marino ran in on the pass and slipped it past Wittman for the game's first goal.

The goal was Marino's first of the season and third of his career.

However, Loyola (Md.) tied the game just four minutes later, when Jamie Darvill beat his defender 1-on-1 and dribbled into the box. He blasted a shot from 15 yards out that beat Midshipmen goalkeeper Tyler Bristol (Clinton, Conn.) to tie the match, 1-1, less than four minutes after Marino's goal.

"I thought we took our foot of the gas once we scored and relaxed a bit," said Brandt. "It was still a mistake that led to their goal and we have to correct that. It was a fairly even game after that, so I am glad of the way we bounced back when they had the momentum."

Loyola (Md.) outshot Navy, 14-10, and drew five corner kicks to Navy's three. The Greyhounds were whistled for just three fouls, while Navy had four, all coming in the first half. Bristol was credited with four saves and the one goal allowed.

Navy will return to Patriot League play on Saturday night when it travels to Bethlehem, Pa., for a key contest with Lehigh. Both the Mids and Mountain Hawks are 1-1-0 in league play.
