ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's soccer team will play five games this spring as part of a challenging slate that features games against four high-profile universities as well as a contest with the Harrisburg City Islanders.

"This will be the most-challenging spring schedule that we have had here at Navy. We are really looking to push the guys and play the best teams we can and we feel that we have done that with this schedule," said Navy head coach Dave Brandt, who will enter his fifth season in charge of the Navy soccer program in 2013. "We have had a strong offseason and these games will really test us."

The Mids will open on Sunday, March 24, against the Harrisburg City Islanders at 3:00 PM in Harrisburg, Pa. The Islanders compete in the United Soccer League and reached the USL playoffs a year ago.

Navy will then begin its collegiate portion of the schedule with games on the road during four straight weekends. All five of Navy's spring games will be on the road.

Navy will face Atlantic 10 power VCU on Saturday, March 30, at 7:00 PM in Richmond, Va. The two teams were scheduled to play last fall on Sept. 1, but the contest was called off just two-plus minutes into the contest because of lightning and was never rescheduled. VCU went 12-4-5 a year ago and reached the NCAA Tournament, losing to Syracuse, 3-2, in double overtime in the second round.

The Midshipmen will then head to Morgantown, W.Va., to face West Virginia on Saturday, April 6, at 12:00 PM. The Mountaineers went 9-6-2 last season, reaching the MAC Tournament semifinals.

Navy will face Cornell on Sunday, April 14, at 12:00 PM in Ithaca, N.Y. Cornell was 15-2-0 a year ago, winning its first Ivy League title since 1995 while losing to Syracuse in the NCAA Tournament's first round on its home field.

Navy's last foe of the spring comes against Big 10 power Penn State on Saturday, April 20, at 4:30 PM. The Nittany Lions were the 2012 Big 10 Champions with a 9-5-3 overall record, but did not receive an NCAA Tournament invitation.

Navy finished 7-7-3 overall and will return nine starters for the 2013 season, and will return a pair of all-Patriot League players in rising senior Nick Dubee and rising sophomore Derek Vogel. Brandt returns the top eight scorers and all four goalkeepers that saw action a year ago.
