Navy Men's Soccer Wraps Up Successful Spring Campaign
May 15, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Using a strong finish to its 2011 season, the Navy men's soccer team continued its positive momentum with a strong spring season that wrapped up with the Alumni Game on April 28. The Midshipmen also went on a Spring Break trip to Spain to become closer as a team and posted a 3-1-2 mark in six games played in the United States.
In 2011, Navy reached its first Patriot League Tournament in 10 years by going 3-0-2 in its final five games, catapulting the team into the spring where it maintained its intensity and focus.
"It was very important for us to make the Patriot League Tournament last fall as kind of a `wind under your wings' moment for this program. We had some tangible success and to get a taste of where we are headed and where we want to keep going was very important," said head coach Dave Brandt, who owns a 22-23-9 record in three seasons at Navy. "It really propelled and pushed us into the offseason. I think for the first time since I have been here that we had a real sense of having our feet under us and knowing who we are and what we want as a team as we move forward. I really felt we were able to make some real definitive steps in improving our program. We made a lot of great strides this spring."
Navy opened the spring season with a 1-0 victory over the Aegean FC Hawks, a semi-pro squad located out of Arlington County. Rising sophomore Joseph Greenspan (Westfield, N.J.) scored on a penalty kick late in the contest for the victory.
Greenspan would add another goal in Navy's 3-1 win over La Salle, then scored the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Georgetown. Greenspan led the team with three goals in six games, not including the trip to Spain. Alex Wilson (rising Jr. / Phoenix, Ariz.), Geoff Fries (rising So. / Broken Arrow, Okla.), David Jackson (rising Sr. / Forest, Va.) and Dave Arnold (rising Jr. / Baltimore, Md.) also scored goals for the Midshipmen this spring.
Navy would also tie Temple (0-0), Saint Joseph's (1-1) and lose to Loyola (5-1).
"I think Joe Greenspan continues to improve and mature up top. He had a really solid spring and showed improvement from last fall," said Brandt. "I think Alex Wilson, who can play either inside or out, has matured in huge ways. He is a very athletic kid and a good player and will be a big factor for us in the fall. Eric Skogerboe (rising Sr. / Leesburg, Va.) had a really good spring as well. We also moved Nick Dubee (rising Jr. / Carolina, R.I.) to the left back position. He had been playing up front for us, but made a permanent move back there and he has taken to it very well. He is very athletic and very strong and its been exciting to watch his progress. He has taken to it so well, it's very exciting to watch him go forward from the back and attack from back there.
"It was a great time to gain experience and everybody on the team is playing at a higher level now than they were last fall," added Brandt.
Brandt will return 17 letterwinners and nine starters from last year's team that went 7-7-5 overall and finished fourth in the Patriot League race. The Midshipmen will open their season on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion.
