ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy senior defenseman Giiehti Christian has been elected the 2012 Navy men's soccer team captain head coach Dave Brandt announced recently. Christian becomes the first defenseman since Scott Robertson in 2009 to be elected team captain.
"Giiehti is the obvious choice and is easily the right choice to lead this particular team," said Brandt, who will enter his fourth season in charge of the program. "He has great leadership abilities in the classroom, in Bancroft Hall and on the field and is a strong, enthusiastic leader that exemplifies what our team is about. The entire team respects him for all the right reasons."
"I am honored and humbled to be voted as the team captain for the Navy men's soccer team. After last season's success, it is important that we do not become complacent. Our team can make great strides this upcoming season both on the field and off," said Christian. "An NCAA Tournament berth is well within our reach and our program can continue to develop into one of the nation's best. That is my goal as captain, to lead us to those goals. We are more than capable and prepared and the upcoming season will be an exciting one."
Christian is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and owns a 3.46 GPA in information technology. He has been a member of the Commandant's List five times and the Superintendent's and Dean's Lists twice during his six semesters at Navy.
On the field, Christian has overcome injuries to appear in 10 career games, registering no statistics. In games during his career that he has played, Navy is 8-1-1 overall and has outscored its opponents, 27-6.
Brandt will return 17 letterwinners and nine starters from last year's team that went 7-7-5 overall and finished fourth in the Patriot League race. The Midshipmen will open their 2012 season on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 2011 NCAA Tournament participant Old Dominion. Navy's home opener will be on Thursday, Aug. 30, when it hosts Robert Morris.
