2012 Roster | 2012 Schedule | 2012 Quick Facts
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's soccer head coach Dave Brandt has announced that nine commitments hailing from six states are currently participating in plebe summer activities and have joined the Navy men's soccer program for the upcoming 2012 season.
"We feel that this is a really good class and one that has already adapted well to the Academy and one that will fit in very well here," said Brandt, who is entering his fourth season at Navy and led the Midshipmen to the Patriot League Tournament a year ago for the first time in 10 seasons. "Positionally, they can fill in the gaps in a wide variety of positions and will help us where we need help. There is very high degree of quality and talent to this group."
Interestingly, two of the recruits in the class have been members of high school programs that have won NSCAA / ESPNRise National Championships. In 2010, incoming goalkeeper Jackson Morgan was part of a St. Ignatius High School (Ohio) program that finished 23-0-0 with eight wins over teams ranked in the top 50 en route to a national title. Last year, defenseman Michael Parker was part of a DeMatha Catholic (Md.) team that outscored opponents, 103-8, and went 20-0-0 on its way to a national title.
"We have several players that have come from high-profile soccer schools that just know how to win," said Brandt. "Almost all of them were part of high school or club programs that won national, state or conference titles or made the state tournament. It is a very accomplished and successful group."
In addition, Navy had its first recruit in school history that earned a national team tryout as incoming 6-4, 195-pound defenseman Derek Vogel
(Long Beach, Calif.) was one of 24 players nationally to be invited to try out for the United States U-20 National Team back in April.
Vogel is one of three defensemen recruited by Brandt.
"Derek Vogel will impact our team right away as a center back and is a big, physical kid that will help our defense immediately. Michael Parker (D / Owings, Md.) is a great leader, has great character and is a hard worker that will work his way into the lineup. Sawyer Gilmore (D / San Diego, Calif.) is a big, athletic kid that came in as a forward. We are moving him to centerback, where we think he has a bright future for us," said Brandt of the defense.
On the offensive end, Brandt is hoping for contributions from forward Thomas Shiiba (F / Swarthmore, Pa.) and Jamie Dubyoski (F / Catonsville, Md.).
"Both of them should be a factor up front and both are very quick and very skilled with the ball. Shiiba is especially dangerous on the wing with the ball," said Brandt.
Midfielders Reid Grayson (Fort Mill, S.C.) and P.J. Suess (Cincinnati, Ohio) give the Midshipmen added depth. Both hail from club programs that were ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Brandt also welcomes in a pair of goalkeepers in Morgan (Brecksville, Ohio) and Ward Gavin (Matthews, N.C.). Both of them are very athletic keepers that are very capable at this level and have promising futures here at Navy, according to Brandt.
