Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy men's soccer senior defender Joseph Greenspan has been named to the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI First Team, the soccer website recently announced. The Best XI is essentially a preseason All-America Team.
Greenspan is one of only three defenders on the Best XI First Team and the only Patriot League student-athlete to make the first, second, third or freshman Best XI teams.
Greenspan is coming off a 2013 season in which he was named to the NSCAA All-America Third Team and the College Soccer News All-America Third Team. He was selected to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team and was the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.
The center back helped Navy rank 15th in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.70 and the Mids posted a school-record 11 shutouts. Greenspan and Derek Vogel, an all-region and first-team all-conference selection, were a formidable pair in Navy's central defense.
Greenspan also scored seven goals in 2013, with three of his goals coming on penalty kicks. Greenspan's biggest goal of the season was a game-winner in double overtime to defeat Army, 1-0, in the annual Star Game. Greenspan also helped Navy shut out Army and the win allowed Navy to finish the Patriot League Regular Season with a 9-0-0 record. Greenspan was named the Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week for his efforts against Army.
Greenspan also scored an insurance goal in the second half of Navy's 2-0 win over Holy Cross in the Patriot League Championship. It was Navy's first-ever Patriot League Tournament title. Greenspan helped Navy shut out both of its opponents in the conference tournament.
Greenspan is Navy's first returning All-American since Walter Bahr in 1969.
Greenspan helped Navy post a 16-4-2 overall record last fall and the Mids won the Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament titles. Navy defeated VCU, 3-0, in the NCAA First Round before having its 15-game win streak snapped by Wake Forest in the NCAA Second Round, 2-1.
Navy finished the season ranked No. 25 in the final NSCAA Top 25 poll and had a final RPI ranking of No. 21.
Navy will open the 2014 season at Air Force on August 29.
