Men's Soccer Ranked 25th in Preseason Poll; Greenspan on MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Joseph Greenspan
Aug. 6, 2014

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Navy men's soccer senior defender Joseph Greenspan has been named to the 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and the Mids are ranked 25th in the NSCAA Preseason Poll.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

The watch lists are compiled by the NSCAA Men's and Women's NCAA Division I All-America Committees, based on their analysis of returning All-America and All-Region players, as well as any prominent newcomers. Greenspan is one of 32 men's players on the watch list, while 35 players have been named to the women's watch list.

Near the end of the collegiate regular season, the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15 men's players. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, by voting for their favorite semifinalist in November. From that pool, three finalists will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.

Four of Navy's 2014 opponents (Army, George Mason, Maryland and UMBC) also have representatives on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.

In addition to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, Greenspan was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI First Team earlier this week. Greenspan is a center back who helped Navy to a 16-4-2 record last season and Patriot League Regular Season and Tournament titles. Navy advanced to the NCAA Second Round and finished the season ranked No. 25 in the year-end NSCAA poll.

Greenspan helped Navy rank 15th in the nation with a goals-against average of 0.70 and the Mids posted a school-record 11 shutouts. He also scored seven goals in 2013, with three of his goals coming on penalty kicks.

He was named to the 2013 NSCAA All-America Third Team and was the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year.

Navy will open the 2014 season ranked at No. 25 (tied with Old Dominion), the same spot that it was voted in the final NSCAA poll of 2013. Last season was the first time since 1971 that Navy finished the season ranked in the national poll.

Navy opens the 2014 season at Air Force on August 29 and has two games on its schedule against other teams in the preseason poll. Navy will host No. 2 Maryland on Sept. 8 and the Mids will also host No. 19 UMBC on Oct. 21.
