ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team will open the 2013 season with a pair of games on the road this weekend. Navy will take on Davidson on Friday at 7:00 PM before playing at Appalachian State on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
Davidson and Appalachian State are both in the Southern Conference. Navy is 5-4-2 all-time against the SoCon. Navy is Davidson's season opener and Appalachian State will host Marshall on Friday night before Sunday's contest with the Mids.
Navy earned a 2-1 win over 2012 Big Ten Regular Season Co-Champion Penn State last weekend in an exhibition match at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Sophomore forwards Thomas Shiiba (Swarthmore, Pa.) and Jamie Dubyoski (Catonsville, Md.) scored for Navy.
Shiiba is one of four Navy players that scored at least 10 points in 2012 along with junior Joseph Greenspan (Westfield, N.J.), sophomore Derek Vogel (Long Beach, Calif.) and junior Grant Valenstein (Laguna Hills, Calif.). Navy ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring last fall with 1.88 goals per game.
Vogel is one of two returning all-league defenders for fifth-year head coach Dave Brandt, along with senior Nick Dubee (Carolina, R.I.). Team captain Zach Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also returns as a starting defenseman.
In total, Navy returns six starters from the 2012 squad that went 7-7-3.
Davidson was 6-11-1 overall last year with a 2-5-0 mark in the Southern Conference. Davidson holds a 1-0-1 lead in the all-time series. The teams last played in 2005 with Davidson earning a 2-1 win.
Davidson was picked to finish seventh out of seven teams in the SoCon.
The Wildcats graduated three of its top four scores last year. The team's top returning scorer is sophomore forward Valeriy Sviderskiy, who scored four goals in 2012.
Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pacifici went 6-11-1 last fall with a 2.06 goals-against average and a .676 save percentage in his rookie season. Pacifici is one of eight returning starters.
Scouting Appalachian State
Appalachian State went 8-7-4 last year with a 2-3-2 conference record. The Mountaineers and the Midshipmen played to a 0-0 draw in Annapolis in 2002, the only other meeting in the series.
Appalachian State lost to High Point, 2-0, in an exhibition match last weekend. The Mountaineers also defeated VMI, 4-1, and downed Lees-McRae, 3-0, in exhibition contests. Freshman Zach Joens scored a hat trick in the win over VMI.
Appalachian State was picked to finish fifth out of seven teams in the SoCon and defenseman Harrison Delbridge was named to the preseason all-conference team.
Junior Stanley Broaden is the team's top returning scorer after tallying six points last fall on two goals and two assists.
The Mountaineers advanced to the SoCon semifinals last fall before falling to Wofford in a shootout.
Navy will have its home opener on Thursday, September 5 against St. Francis Brooklyn at 7:00 PM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Navy will also host Central Connecticut State on Saturday, September 7 at 7:00 PM. Navy is 16-13-3 at home during the Coach Brandt era.
