Richmond Post-Game Highlights
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- For their roles in Navy's 1-0-1 record last week, two Navy men's soccer players earned weekly accolades handed out by the Patriot League on Monday afternoon. Alex Wilson was named the Patriot League / BRINE Offensive Player of the Week while Derek Vogel was named the Patriot League / BRINE Rookie of the Week announced by the league office.
It is the first career weekly honor for Wilson, while Vogel's accolade marks the second time that he has earned league Rookie of the Week honors this year.
Wilson, a junior forward from Phoenix, Ariz., had a hand in three of Navy's six goals last week, all coming in the 5-0 win over Richmond. He assisted on Navy's first two goals of the game, then scored his second goal of the season in the 22nd minute which gave Navy a 3-0 lead. His two assists and four points were a career high and he tied a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility for assists in a game with the two helpers. Despite missing the season opener against 13th-ranked Old Dominion, Wilson leads the team in points (6), goals (2) and assists (2). Wilson currently ranks fourth in the Patriot League in points (6) but is first in points per game (1.50). His two goals scored ranks tied for fourth and his two assists are third in the Patriot League rankings.
Wilson is Navy's current active career leader in assists (7) and he has scored 17 points (5 g, 7 a) in 38 career games, while being just one point shy of his career-high seven points scored as a sophomore a year ago.
Vogel, a 6-3, 200-pound freshman defenseman from Long Beach, Calif., had a sensational week en route to Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season, and for the second time in three weeks. As a center back, Vogel and the rest of the Navy defense held its two opponents to just 16 total shots (six on goal) and scoreless for the last 191 minutes played after Delaware scored in the ninth minute of last week's contest. In the win over Richmond, Vogel spearheaded a Navy squad that held the Spiders to just four shots, including one in the decisive first half. Over the last four games, Navy has allowed just three goals with two coming from the nation's highest-scoring team, High Point. During that span, the Midshipmen have allowed just 39 shots (9.8 per game) with just 13 of them being on target (3.3 per game).
Vogel also earned Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 3 following Navy's 2-0 win over Robert Morris.
The Navy men's soccer team will be in action tomorrow night when it travels to George Mason in Fairfax, Va., for a 7:00 PM kick-off. Navy will return home for its Patriot League opener on Saturday, Sept. 22, against Lafayette, beginning at 8:00 PM.
