Men's Soccer to Make Short Trip to UMBC Wednesday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team (1-5-0) will play at UMBC (4-1-1) on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the Retriever Soccer Park. The game will be Navy's last non-conference contest before Patriot League play begins Saturday at home against Holy Cross.
The Navy-UMBC game will have free live video and live statistics.
Navy is coming off a 2-1 loss at Duquesne on Saturday evening. Senior Aubrey Jones scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, but the Dukes rallied with goals in the 36th and 61st minutes to claim the victory. It was the third time this season that Navy lost a game in which it held a 1-0 lead.
Navy outshot Duquesne, 11-10, and had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Navy also led in corner kicks, 4-2.
Jones has scored twice in Navy's last three games. He also scored in Navy's 3-1 win over James Madison on Sept. 9. Jones' two goals this season have come on only seven shots.
Jones and senior forward Daniel Zaremba share the Navy team lead in goals (2) and points (4) this season. Jones has eight career goals and 18 career points, while Zaremba has eight career goals and 21 career points.
Jones and Zaremba are tied for fourth place in the Patriot League this season with their two goals scored.
Navy is currently ranked fourth out of 10 teams in the Patriot League in goals per game at 1.00. Navy is sixth in the league in goals-against average at 1.62.
Navy and UMBC will be meeting for the eighth straight season on Wednesday. Navy is 19-5-4 all-time against UMBC and Navy is 4-2-1 in the seven games played over the last seven years.
Navy rallied for a 2-1 win over UMBC in Annapolis last season for its third straight win in the series. UMBC's Sammy Kahsai scored in the 33rd minute, but 2017 graduate Sam Bascom tied the game in the 70th minute and Andrew Hopkins scored the game-winning goal for Navy in the 74th minute.
UMBC is ranked seventh in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll.
UMBC's last game was a 1-1 draw with George Washington on Saturday. UMBC defeated West Virginia, 3-1, in Baltimore last Wednesday night. West Virginia has been ranked as high as No. 14 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll this season. The Retrievers' only loss this season was at Villanova, 5-2.
UMBC's high-powered offense ranks 23rd in the NCAA in goals per game (2.0), sixth in shots per game (17.7), seventh in shots on goal per game (7.8) and second in corner kicks per game (8.7).
Junior defender Kyle Saunderson leads UMBC in goals (3) and points (6) this season, while senior midfielder Gregg Hauck has two goals for four points.
Freshman goalkeeper Ciaran O'Loughlin owns a 1.24 goals-against average with two shutouts.
UMBC was 5-9-3 overall last season and 0-7-0 in the America East.
Navy will open its 27th season of Patriot League play by hosting Holy Cross (1-4-1) on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Navy and Holy Cross played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season.
