Men’s Soccer to Host Holy Cross in Patriot League Opener Saturday

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s soccer team (1-6-0) will open its 27th season of Patriot League play by hosting Holy Cross (2-4-1) on Saturday at 11:00 AM at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Free live video will be available with Joe Miller handling the play-by-play. Live statistics will also be available.
Due to the Navy football game vs. Cincinnati this Saturday, the soccer fan shuttle will run from the new Navy Clinic at 695 Kinkaid Road. Fans can show their Navy-Cincinnati football ticket for free admission to the men’s soccer game on Saturday.
The Navy-Holy Cross game will kick off at 11:00 AM due to the Navy-Cincinnati football game on Saturday. Navy also played James Madison at 11:00 AM earlier this year before a Navy football game. The Mids defeated James Madison, 3-1, in that contest. Navy will also play an 11:00 AM game against Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 7 before the Navy-Air Force football game.
Navy is 74-89-21 in Patriot League Regular Season action since joining the league in 1991. Navy has made 10 appearances in the Patriot League Tournament and won the tournament championship in 2013.
Navy was selected eighth in this year’s Patriot League Preseason Poll, while Holy Cross was picked 10th.
Navy is seeking to snap a three-game losing skid on Saturday. Navy most recently fell at UMBC, 2-0, on Wednesday.
Jones and Zaremba are tied for fourth in the Patriot League in goals scored.
Zaremba is Navy’s active leader in career points (21), while he and Jones are tied for the team’s active lead in career goals with eight apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Mac Burke has played all 645 minutes in goal for Navy this season. Burke has a 1.67 goals-against average, a .700 save percentage and averages 4.00 saves. Burke ranks third in the Patriot League and 60th in the NCAA in saves per game.
Navy ranks fourth in the Patriot League in goals scored per game (0.86) and sixth in goals allowed per game (1.71).
Holy Cross is coming off a 3-0 win over Northeastern on Wednesday evening. Sean Merrick, Arno Rupp and Tyler Bell scored the goals for Holy Cross, while goalkeeper Henry Stutz made three saves for his second shutout of the season.
Rupp leads Holy Cross with two goals scored this season.
Holy Cross leads the all-time series against Navy, 14-12-3, but the Mids are 4-0-1 in the last five meetings.
Navy and Holy Cross played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season in Annapolis. Brad Ross scored on a header in just the second minute for Holy Cross, while Sam Bascom evened the game at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Burke made seven saves in the contest for Navy.
Navy will next host Saint Joseph’s (2-3-2) in a non-conference midweek game on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 PM before returning to league play with a game at preseason favorite Loyola (3-2-1) on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Parking / Shuttle Information
Fans are reminded that the general public does not have access to drive their vehicles on to the U.S. Naval Academy. Fans may park at the new Navy Clinic at 695 Kinkaid Road and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting at 10:00 AM, one hour prior to the game and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed. Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID. Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
