Greenspan and Vogel Pick Up National, League Accolades
Sept. 24, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's soccer players Joseph Greenspan and Derek Vogel were honored on Monday by a pair of sources after leading the Navy men's soccer team to an unbeaten week which featured a win over 20th-ranked George Mason and a 4-2 triumph in the Patriot League opener over Lafayette.
Greenspan, a 6-5 sophomore forward from Westfield, N.J., was named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week as well being named as the Patriot League / BRINE Offensive Player of the Week after scoring eight points (3 g, 2 a) in two Navy victories last week. In Wednesday's 2-1 double-overtime victory against No. 20-ranked George Mason, Greenspan recorded a career-high two assists. He followed that performance up with Navy's first hat trick since the 2007 season (Doug DeVuono vs. Florida Gulf Coast) in the Midshipmen's 4-2 victory over Lafayette. Greenspan scored Navy's first two goals in the first half, then added a penalty kick goal after he drew a foul in the box early in the second half.
The three goals scored by Greenspan is a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility first (on the men's side) and it was the first hat trick against a Patriot League opponent since Michael Paisant had three goals against Army in the 1999 season. He also became the first underclassmen (freshman or sophomore) with a hat trick since Cliff Carpenter scored three times against William & Mary in the 1990 campaign. Greenspan now is tied for the Patriot League lead with nine points (3 g, 3 a), is second in points per game (1.29) and second in goals scored (3).
Greenspan becomes the first Navy player since Sept. 2010 (Michael Rakoczy) to be named to the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week. For his career, Greenspan has tallied 17 points (7 g, 3 a) in 26 career games and leads an offense that ranks in the top 30 nationally in goals per game (2.00). The Mids have scored 11 goals in the last three matches after scoring three goals in season's first four contests.
Navy has won back-to-back Offensive Player of the Week awards after Alex Wilson (Jr. / Phoenix, Ariz.) won the award on Sept. 17.
Vogel, a 6-3 freshman defenseman from Long Beach, Calif., was named the Patriot League / BRINE Rookie of the Week for the second straight week and the third time already this year (Sept. 4, Sept. 17, Sept. 24). Vogel scored Navy's first goal in the Mids' 2-1 win over 20th-ranked George Mason last Wednesday, then added the game-winning goal in the 43rd minute against Lafayette on Saturday. His goal against the Leopards came right before halftime and just two minutes after Lafayette had scored to cut the Navy advantage to 2-1. Vogel ranks tied for third on the team in scoring with four points and his two goals is tied for second. He also led a Navy defense that held George Mason to just one goal, after the Patriots entered the game ranked in the nation's top five in scoring by averaging 3.00 goals per game.
Vogel wins his third Patriot League / BRINE Rookie of the Week honor, tying a league record set four other times, including by Navy's Aaron Dupere (Jr. / Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) in 2010. In addition, the back-to-back awards marks the sixth time in league history that a player has won consecutive ROW awards, also done by Dupere and Patrick Sopko (Jr. / Gloucester, Va.) in 2010.
Navy will face Big East member Pittsburgh on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, beginning at 7:00 PM. On Sunday, Sept. 30, Navy travels to beautiful PPL Park in Chester, Pa., to face Army for the 79th time in series history, kicking off at 2:00 PM.
