Greenspan wins another accolade after big week.
Sept. 25, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's soccer player Joseph Greenspan added to his list of accolades on Tuesday as he was named the NAAA Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls Royce. The award follows a day where he was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week as well as earning a spot on the CollegeSoccerNews.com National Team of the Week.
Greenspan, a 6-5 sophomore forward from Westfield, N.J., was named the NAAA Athlete of the Week after scoring eight points (3 g, 2 a) in two Navy victories last week. In last Wednesday's 2-1 double-overtime victory against No. 20-ranked George Mason, Greenspan recorded a career-high two assists. He followed that performance up with Navy's first hat trick since the 2007 season (Doug DeVuono vs. Florida Gulf Coast) in the Midshipmen's 4-2 victory over Lafayette. Greenspan scored Navy's first two goals in the first half, then added a penalty kick goal after he drew a foul in the box early in the second half.
The three goals scored by Greenspan is a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility first (on the men's side) and it was the first hat trick against a Patriot League opponent since Michael Paisant had three goals against Army in the 1999 season. He also became the first underclassmen (freshman or sophomore) with a hat trick since Cliff Carpenter scored three times against William & Mary in the 1990 campaign. Greenspan now is tied for the Patriot League lead with nine points (3 g, 3 a), is second in points per game (1.29) and second in goals scored (3). Greenspan ranks 78th in the country in points per game (1.29), 73rd in assists per game (0.43) and 64th in total assists (3).
For his career, Greenspan has tallied 17 points (7 g, 3 a) in 26 career games and leads an offense that ranks 31st nationally in goals per game (2.00). The Mids have scored 11 goals in the last three matches after scoring three goals in season's first four contests.
Navy will face Big East member Pittsburgh on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, beginning at 7:00 PM. On Sunday, Sept. 30, Navy travels to beautiful PPL Park in Chester, Pa., to face Army for the 79th time in series history, kicking off at 2:00 PM.
