Men’s Soccer to Host Saint Joseph’s in Non-Conference Match Tuesday
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s soccer team (1-6-1, 0-0-1 PL) will take a break from conference play to host Saint Joseph’s (2-4-2) in a non-conference match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Live statistics will be available, but there will not be live video.
Navy opened Patriot League play with a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Holy Cross on Saturday. Navy sophomore midfielder Piroz Bahar scored off an assist from TJ Powers in the 43rd minute. Holy Cross evened the game in the 79th minute on a penalty kick goal and the game remained tied through the final horn in the 110th minute.
It was the second straight season that Navy and Holy Cross played to a 1-1 tie.
Bahar scored his first career goal and became the fifth different Mid to score a goal this season. Seniors Aubrey Jones and Daniel Zaremba lead the team with two goals each, while Bahar and freshmen Phillip Gustafson and Nicko West have each scored once.
Navy senior goalkeeper Mac Burke made five saves in the tie with Holy Cross. Burke ranks second in the Patriot League in saves per game (4.13).
Through one round of league games, Navy and Holy Cross are tied for fifth place in the Patriot League standings with one point apiece.
Navy has jumped on teams early this season, scoring first in five of its eight games, but the Mids have only held on to win one of those contests (James Madison). Navy has been outscored 9-2 after halftime this season.
Saint Joseph’s enters Tuesday’s contest with an overall record of 2-4-2. The Hawks have dropped three straight games to Sacred Heart (2-1), Villanova (3-0) and Yale (1-0). The Hawks have not yet played an Atlantic 10 conference match.
Senior midfielder Matt Crawford leads the Hawks with five goals and 10 points. Crawford has scored five of Saint Joseph’s seven goals this season. Crawford scored three goals in Saint Joseph’s season-opening 3-1 win over Temple. Freshman midfielder Aidan Watkins and sophomore midfielder Matt Mullock scored the Hawks’ other two goals.
Senior goalkeeper Greg O’Connell is 2-4-1 with a 1.20 goals-against average and an .826 save percentage.
Navy is 8-0-0 all-time against Saint Joseph’s. The eight-game streak is also Navy’s longest active unbeaten streak against any Division I opponent. The series began in 1966 and Navy has defeated Saint Joseph’s 1-0 in each of the last two seasons.
Navy is 39-33-12 all-time against teams in the Atlantic 10.
Navy will next return to league play with a match at preseason favorite Loyola (4-2-1, 1-0-0 PL) on Saturday at 7:00 PM in Baltimore.
Parking / Shuttle Information
Fans are reminded that the general public does not have access to drive their vehicles on to the U.S. Naval Academy. Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for $5 and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting at 6:00 PM, one hour prior to the game and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed. Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID. Enter Gate 5 off Taylor Ave. to park at the stadium. Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
