ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy senior soccer player Alex Foskett has been named the Patriot League / BRINE Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career, the Patriot League office announced on Monday afternoon.
Foskett, a senior defenseman from Manassas, Va., helped Navy to its second straight Star Game victory on Saturday night with a 1-0 blanking of Army. The Midshipmen allowed 11 shots in the contest, including zero in the game's first 38 minutes. The Navy defense held the Black Knights to just one shot on goal during the contest in recording its third shutout in its first six games of the 2010 season.
The Navy defense has been stellar all season long, ranking second in the Patriot League in goals against average (0.50) and shutouts (3). Navy has not given up more than one goal in a game in 2010, and has shut out its opponents for the last 168:06 dating back to the UNC Greensboro game on Sept. 18.
Foskett has also contributed on the offensive end, ranking tied for third on the team with two assists.
Meanwhile, the Midshipmen have jumped from fourth to second in the NSCAA /HendrickCars.com Middle Atlantic regional poll announced on Monday afternoon. The 5-1-0 Midshipmen have won five of their first six games of the year for just the fifth time since 1975 (1975, 1991, 2000, 2001) after Saturday's 1-0 win over Army. Colgate (4-1-3) is ranked first and is followed by Navy (5-1-0), Lafayette (4-2-2), Saint Louis (2-2-1), American (4-3-0), Duquesne (4-3-0) and Dayton (3-3-1). Navy will play twice this week on Wednesday against George Washington at home and on Saturday against Patriot League preseason favorite Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., on Saturday.
Navy's lone loss on the season came on Sept. 18 at UNC Greensboro, 1-0. The Spartans are ranked 11th in the south regional rankings behind such powers as North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest.
Navy will host George Washington on Wednesday night at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, beginning at 7:00 pm. It will be the final non-conference home game of the year for the Midshipmen. With a win, Navy will finish its non-conference home slate undefeated at 5-0-0 for the first time since the 1994 campaign and the first time in Glenn Warner Soccer Facility history.
Tickets are available at 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the ticket window prior to the game. JROTC members may attend the game at a discounted price of $2 if purchased in advance, and the game will be a Brigade Night / Study Break night, where Midshipmen are asked to have a grab-and-go dinner in Bancroft Hall and attend the game afterwards.
