Men’s Soccer to Play at Preseason Favorite Loyola Saturday Night

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men’s soccer team (2-6-1, 0-0-1 PL) will play at Loyola (4-3-1, 1-0-0 PL) on Saturday at 7:00 PM at the Ridley Athletic Complex. Free live video and live statistics will be available.

Loyola sits in a four-way tie for first place in the Patriot League with three points, while Navy is tied for fifth place with one point.

Navy is 1-0-1 in its last two games. Navy tied Holy Cross, 1-1, in its Patriot League opener last Saturday and defeated Saint Joseph’s, 3-0, on Tuesday evening.

Navy sophomore Piroz Bahar scored for Navy in the draw with Holy Cross. Freshman Toni Adewole, senior Daniel Zaremba and freshman Phillip Gustafson scored the goals against Saint Joseph’s. Zaremba also had an assist against Saint Joseph’s and junior TJ Powers had two assists.

Navy senior goalkeeper Mac Burke made five saves to post the shutout win over Saint Joseph’s.

Zaremba leads Navy in scoring this season with seven points on three goals and one assist. Zaremba has scored three goals for the third straight season and now has nine goals for his career.

Senior Aubrey Jones and Gustafson are second on the team in points with four each as they have both scored two goals in 2017. Powers leads the team with three assists.

 

 

Zaremba is tied for fifth place in the Patriot League in points (7) and tied for fourth in goals scored (3).

Burke has a 1.38 goals-against average and a .745 save percentage. He ranks second in the Patriot League with 4.22 saves per game.

As a team, Navy is fourth in the Patriot League in goals per game (1.11) and fifth in goals-against average (1.38).

Loyola won its Patriot League opener over Colgate, 2-1, last Friday. Freshman midfielder T.J. Walker scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute. The Greyhounds then fell to Cleveland State, 2-1, in a non-conference game Monday night.

Sophomore midfielder Barry Sharifi leads Loyola in scoring this season with seven points on three goals and one assist.

Freshman goalkeeper Chase Vosvick is 4-2-1 with a 1.38 goals-against average and a .714 save percentage. Vosvick has posted three shutouts.

Loyola is ranked fifth in this week’s United Soccer Coaches Northeast Regional rankings. The Greyhounds were also tabbed as the Patriot League favorite in the league’s preseason poll.

Navy will be playing at Loyola for the second straight season. The Greyhounds defeated the Mids last season at Ridley, 3-2. Navy leads the all-time series against Loyola, 3-2-2, and the Mids are 2-1-1 against Loyola since the Greyhounds joined the Patriot League in 2013.

Navy will next play at American (1-7-1, 0-1-0 PL) in another conference game on Wednesday at 3:00 PM.
