ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team (7-3-2, 4-0-0 PL) will look to continue its six-game winning streak at Bucknell (8-3-1, 2-1-1 PL) on Saturday evening at Holmes Stadium. The 7:00 PM game will be streamed for free on the Patriot League Network and live statistics will be available.
Navy enters the weekend in a tie with Army for first place in the Patriot League standings with 12 points. Bucknell currently sits in a tie for fourth place with seven points. Each team will have four remaining Patriot League games after the Navy-Bucknell contest.
Navy hasn't lost a game or allowed a goal in over a month. The Mids have posted six straight shutout victories and have outscored their opponents 12-0 during that span. The six straight shutout wins are the most since 2000, when Navy posted eight straight wins and seven straight shutouts.
Navy has also taken down some of the Patriot League's top teams so far this season. Navy defeated defending regular season champion American (1-0), defeated defending tournament champion Lafayette (2-0) and also bested Boston U. (1-0), who was picked to finish second in the preseason poll for their first season in the league.
Sophomore Jamie Dubyoski (Catonsville, Md.) recently took over the Patriot League lead in points scored with 17. Dubyoski has scored eight goals and has one assist. Dubyoski scored in four straight games in the middle of the season and he has also scored in each of Navy's last two games.
Senior goalkeeper Gavin Snyder (Severna Park, Md.) is 6-0-0 with five solo shutouts and one combined shutout. Snyder has a 0.00 goals-against average and a 1.000 save percentage. Snyder replaced an injured Aaron Dupere three minutes into Navy's game against George Washington, which was also the first of Navy's six straight shutout wins.
Aiding Snyder has been the play of Navy's defense, especially its two center backs Derek Vogel (Long Beach, Calif.) and Joseph Greenspan (Westfield, N.J.). Vogel and Greenspan have played all 540 minutes of Navy's current scoreless streak and they are the only two players to have logged over 1,000 minutes on the season.
Navy is most recently coming off a 2-0 win at Lafayette on Wednesday. The two teams played a 0-0 game until the last five minutes when freshman Sam Bascom (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Dubyoski tallied late goals for Navy. Snyder needed to make only one save and Navy's defense held Lafayette to just five shots.
During Patriot League play, Navy is ranked No. 1 in both goals per game (1.75) and goals-allowed per game (0.00).
After Bucknell carried a five-game winning streak into the beginning of conference play, the Bison fell to Army, 2-0, in its league opener. Bucknell then defeated Lehigh, 3-0, and Loyola, 2-0, before drawing with American, 1-1.
Bucknell's Jesse Klug is third in the Patriot League with 12 points (six goals) and Chris Thorsheim has 11 points on five goals and one assist. Goalkeeper Mike Lansing is 6-3-1 with a 0.68 goals-against average and a .870 save percentage.
Bucknell leads the all-time series against Navy, 22-11-3. The two teams tied last season, 1-1, in Lewisburg. Brendan Burgdorf scored for Bucknell in the 19th minute and Thomas Shiiba (Swarthmore, Pa.) scored for Navy in the 38th minute. Snyder made six saves for Navy and Lansing made nine saves for Bucknell.
Navy is ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll this week and Bucknell is No. 9.
Navy will play its final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, October 22 when the team hosts NJIT at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility at 7:00 PM.
