CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -
The Navy men's soccer duo of senior goalkeeper Gavin Snyder (Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore defenseman Derek Vogel (Long Beach, Calif.) have received weekly honors from the Patriot League, the conference office announced Monday. Snyder is the Patriot League BRINE Goalkeeper of the Week, while Vogel is the Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 20.
Snyder and Vogel helped Navy (8-3-2) to a 2-0 record last week against conference opponents on the road. With Navy's 2-0 win at Lafayette and 2-1 win at Bucknell, the Mids have a perfect 5-0-0 record in league play and are tied for first place with Army.
Against Lafayette, Snyder and Vogel helped Navy post its sixth straight shutout victory of the season. Snyder made one save and Vogel helped limit Lafayette to just five shots in the game and only one on goal.
In the win at Bucknell, Snyder made season-high six saves and clamped down after allowing a goal in the sixth minute. Navy tied the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute when Vogel scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick. Vogel came up from his center back position on the set piece and headed the ball into the goal off of Martin Sanchez's (Salisbury, Md.) first of two assists in the game. It was Navy's first win over Bucknell since 2001.
Snyder recently became eligible for national and conference statistical rankings by meeting the minimum of playing 50 percent of the team's minutes in goal. Snyder is now ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in goals-against average (0.14) and save percentage (.958).
Snyder is 7-0-0 on the year and he began his playing time this season by going on a 542-minute scoreless streak. He has five solo shutouts and one combined shutout. Snyder did not see any action until the seventh game of the season.
This is Snyder's first career Patriot League weekly award. He was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week on October 1.
Vogel, the 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, has played key role in Navy's defensive efforts this season, along with his backline mates Joseph Greenspan (Westfield, N.J.), Nick Dubee (Carolina, R.I.), Blake Busse (San Diego, Calif.) and Zach Davis (Colorado Springs, Colo), in addition to Sanchez and Guy Skord (Annapolis, Md.) in the Navy midfield.
This is Vogel's fifth career weekly award from the Patriot League and his first of the season.
Navy will host NJIT on Tuesday at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in a 7:00 PM contest.
