ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy men's soccer players Sam Miller and Alex Foskett have both been named to the ESPN / CoSIDA Academic All-District II first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Just three other teams in the district (Saint Francis [Pa.], La Salle and Penn State) had two players named to the first team.
All first-team members from eight districts nationally are now eligible for inclusion on the Academic All-America ballot. To be eligible for the ballot, student-athletes must have a 3.30 cumulative GPA, must have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility and must have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form.
Foskett, a senior defenseman from Manassas, Va., earns his first academic all-district honor after compiling a 3.73 cumulative GPA in electrical engineering. Foskett, who was a member of the 2009 Patriot League men's soccer academic honor roll, has started all 15 games as a defensemen for the Midshipmen, which own a 7-4-4 overall record and are ranked third in the NSCAA / HendrickCars.com Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings. Foskett ranks tied for third on the team in assists with two and has started all 34 games over the last two seasons. For his career, he has played in 40 games, starting the last 34 contests. He was named to the 2010 Navy / UMBC Kickoff Classic All-Tournament team and was selected as the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 27.
Miller, a junior midfielder from Tulsa, Okla., earns his second ESPN / CoSIDA All-District honor after being named to the second team a year ago. This year's first-team selection owns a 3.93 GPA in mechanical engineering, ranking 28th on the academic order of merit and 59th on the junior class' overall order of merit. The two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection has seen action in all 15 games with 10 starts in the 2010 season. Miller has scored two goals (against Wofford and Holy Cross) this year to rank tied for fourth on the team in goals, while ranking second on the squad with 23 shots. For his career, Miller has played in 48 games with 26 starts. He has scored four goals for eight points during his career.
Navy's last first-team all-district honoree was Evan Barnes in 2007. Barnes would go on to be named a third-team Academic All-American and win the Lowe's Senior Class Award that year.
The Midshipmen will close out the regular season on Saturday night against Lafayette, beginning at 7:00 pm. The Mids currently sit in fourth place in the Patriot League standings and a win over the Leopards would advance Navy to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since the 2001 season. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY or at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility ticket window prior to the contest.
