ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore defenseman Derek Vogel (Long Beach, Calif.) has been named the Patriot League BRINE Defensive Player of the Week and the Navy men's soccer team (12-3-2, 8-0 PL) broke into the TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 poll on Monday, coming in at No. 24.
Vogel scored the game-winning goal in Navy's 2-1 win over Loyola on Saturday evening. The win secured the Patriot League Regular Season title for the Mids and hosting duties for the league's semifinals and final from November 15-17 at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
Vogel scored on a header in the 48th minute against Loyola and was a key part of Navy's defensive backline in the win over Loyola and in Navy's 2-1 win over Lehigh on Wednesday.
Vogel has tallied seven points on two goals and three assists this season and he leads all Navy players with 1,542 minutes played.
Vogel, the 2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, receives his second conference award of the season and the sixth of his career.
Navy has won 11-straight games, the longest active winning streak in the nation, and is ranked in a national poll for the first time this season. Navy is also receiving votes in the College Soccer News Top 30 poll for the second straight week.
The NSCAA Top 25 Poll, widely considered the main college soccer poll, will be released on Tuesday afternoon.
Navy will face Army on Friday at PPL Park, the home of the Philadelphia Union, in Chester, Pa. in its regular season finale.
The Mids will play in the first of two conference semifinal games at 4:00 pm on November 15 at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Patriot League Championship will be contested at Glenn Warner on Sunday, November 17 at 1:00 pm.
